Description: Bellow, Saul. 5 First Editions. 8vo. Hardcover, 4 in dj, 1 in slipcase. ++ THE ADVENTURES OF AUGIE MARCH. Viking Press, 1953. 1st edition of Bellow’s 3rd book. Base of c-page: “Printed in the U.S.A. by the Vail-Ballou Press, Inc.” “$4.50” dj price. “The Short Novels of John Steinbeck” blurb on rear flap but no reviewer quotes. Black/gray duotone cloth lettered in orange. Red-orange topstain. Very good in worn dj well repaired on underside. ++ SEIZE THE DAY. Viking, 1956. 1st ed. of Bellow’s 4th book. “Published in November 1956...” on c-page, “$3.00” dj price. Very good, couple marginal tears to dj, edgewear mostly to dj’s spine ends. Upper corner of dj flaps have minor dampstain. ++ HENDERSON THE RAIN KING. Viking, 1959. 1st ed. of Bellow’s 5th book. Yellow topstain, “$4.50” dj price. 3 quotes from reviewers on rear panel under the heading “Saul Bellow as a novelist,” 3 more reviewer quotes on rear flap. Very good, creasing/wear to dj’s edges, more wear around dj’s spine crown. ++ HERZOG. Viking, (1964). 1st edition, 1st issue (with so-called “gray” initial letters): More accurately, the first letter of each chapter has white spots from poor printing, generally more so than on the title page. C-page credits H. Wolff Manufacturing and has “M B G.” “$5.75” at upper corner of front dj flap. Bottom of front flap: “The Viking Press New York/ Jacket Design by Mel Williamson.” Photo of Bellow on rear panel. Rear flap does not list any post-1959 titles. No quotes from reviewers on dj. Book itself is very good, blue topstain dulled. Dj good with nicks/chips/wear along edges. Foxing to dj flaps and a small area in margin of last 15 or 20 pages. ++ THE DEAN’S DECEMBER. 1st edition, #17 of 500 signed by Saul Bellow on limitation page. Red cloth, in matching slipcase. Near fine. 7.4 Lb.
