Details: This lot consists of the vintage political posters and memorabilia shown in the corresponding images.
Among the pieces in this lot are two large campaign posters for Nixon & Agnew, as well as a custom lacquerware box with an embedded abalone or mother of pearl design on the lid. This box is signed by the maker on the inside of the lid in gold paint, "To Mr. James A. Suffridge / Vice-President AFL-CIO from Tran-Quoc-Buu / President C.V.T.C. Vietnam." Found inside the box are two business cards and two tie tacks. One card has a handwritten inscription that reads "with his most cordial greetings"; and the other, "[Tran-Quoc-Buu] cordially offers Mr. Suffridge a C.V.T.C. badge as a token of our friendship."
Suffridge (1909-2001) was a labor union leader who transformed the Retail Clerks International Association into one of the most influential white collar unions in the country. He was President of the International Federation of Commercial, Clerical, & Technical Employees and also Vice President of the AFL-CIO. He frequently clashed with other unions and was a major union organizer for Asian-Americans.
T.Q. Buu was Vietnam's labor leader through the 1960s for the Confederation of Christian Labor (C.V.T.C.; the name "Christian" being dropped in 1964). He was a nationalist who served a lengthy jail term for anti-colonial activity.
