Munich, Bavaria, GermanyLive Auction
Description: Iron helmet bowl formed of 76 flat suji plates with gilt interior. The individual plates studded at the edges with numerous, cone-shaped hoshi (rivets) which decrease in size toward the tehen. Exceptionally well preserved russet iron surface, lateral holders for the wakidate. Inscribed "Saotome Iyehisa". (Due to the spelling of the kanji "Sa" the bowl can clearly be attributed to the mid Edo period). Engraved mabezashi with invocations to different deities "Amaterasu Kami", "Kazusa Daimyochin" and "Sumiyoshi Dai Myochin". A row of shikoro preserved, on it fukigaeshi with applied silver mon of the Tatsuma clan from the Harima province. Mabezashi and fukigaeshi with elaborate shakudo fukurin. Leather of the shikoro row replaced. Height 18 cm, width 28 cm. Exceptionally accurately crafted, elegantly shaped helmet.
