Defined by their bracket construction and designed to be affixed to walls, console tables are first recorded in the late 17th century. While at that time the table frames were decorated richly and pompously with caryatids, foliage or putti, following styles replaced such decorative forms with freer and less ponderous decorations.
The console table is in age-related condition. The gilding is slighly rubbed or flaked off in places. Partial tension cracks. The marble plate shows several repaired breakages as well as partial bumping marks. (ala)
