Description: A crewel embroidered work bag, English, dated 1710, worked with a flowering plant sprouting from a hummock with small beasts running to either side, some of the blooms with French knot centres, edged in scarlet wool braid with tassels, 58 by 45cm, 22 3/4 by 17 3/4in See KTA June 2004 lot 60 for a very similar bag dated 1704
Condition Report: Linen ground has gone brown with age, red wool blanket stitch outer edges have worn, one leaf on one side was never embroidered and shows the original pencil design, colours are good overall. On one side, the dated side, 2 leaves have frayed edges to the embroidery. On other side - one lobe of a leaf is worn. Red blanket stitch edging is very worn on one corner. Braid edging on top edge is good. Buttonhole stitch on tassels is worn revealing the wooden cores.
