Description: Admiralty pattern no. 189N, serial no. 1250H. With a 3.5ins (9cm)diam. spirit damped compass, the card marked in quadrants and degrees and stamped Patt.188A, no.930K. Mounted on a lockable gimbal in a brass and mahogany binnacle, fitted with a double window cowling, the column fitted with an adjustable light shutter from a single lamp in the base, the whole on a brass locking foot ring. 18.5ins. Introduced in 1909 as a portable binnacle for use in the conning tower, as an aid to navigation when running on the surface. The instrument became known as Faithful Freddy to generations of submariners.
