Lot 58A: A fantastic Egyptian bronze mirror, 18th Dynasty
December 4, 2016
Montrose, CA, USALive Auction
Description: A fantastic Egyptian bronze mirror, 18th Dynasty, c.1543-1292 BC, the handle in the form of youthful nude woman with her arms supporting the mirror itself, a lovely and typical form that bronze mirrors took in the 18th Dynasty. The young woman is likely to depict a servant girl of the owner, as female servants have often been depicted holding mirrors for their masters. It is also thought that the young woman depicted in this style of mirror may represent the goddess Hathor, who was tied to beauty and womanhood. Extremely well-detailed with a pleasing even chocolate brown patina. H: 11 2/3 in (29.7cm), Mirror W: 6 3/5 in (16.7cm). Ex Maine private estate.
