Description: the hexagonal plinth mounted with a crucifix flanked by Mary and St John and a child with automaton head seated on a skull beside a horizontal hour dial with central alarm disc the cross surmounted by a revolving dome further indicating the hours against a pointer, the movement with four finely turned vase-shaped pillars, signed on the backplate Nicolaus Schmidt Der Junger, fusee to the going train, verge escapement with later balance and hair spring, standing barrel to the striking train with pierced and engraved striking gate, the count wheel with engraved centre and mounted on the backplate, the decorative hammer striking on a bell, the child’s head moving with the strike, alarm train removed, the ebony and ebonised base with glazed panels and gilt-brass bun feet,
In generally good condition with alteration and restorations. Gilding in generally good condition, some rubbing to plinth, dial good, pointer replaced. Movement has later conversion to balance and hairspring, alarm train removed and later plate installed to cover the holes in the backplate, striking train running at time of cataloguing but all would benefit from cleaning and overhaul. Case in restored condition, hinges replaced to base, feet re-fitted. With a winder.
