Description: A Historic Nazi naval wrist watch, from the pocket battleship Graf Spee, chronograph function with telemeter scale dial marked with KM Kriegsmarine and maker's name Hanhart. Reverse stamped with eagle & swastika 269 and Bodenedsistahl. GC Inside front cover. E950-1000 This watch was given to J.Purvis, ships cook on SS Streonshalh. The ship was sunk by the pocket battleship Graf Spee on 7th December 1939 and the survivors, including Mr.Purvis, were picked up from the water and taken prisoner on the Graf Spee. One of the German sailors guarding the prisoners became quite friendly with Mr. Purvis. After some time the Graff Spee was chased down to the River Plate by British battleships where eventually her Captain decided to scuttle her. Both the crew of the Graf Spee and her British prisoners were interned in Montevedeo as they were in a neutral country until the end of the war At the end of their internment the German sailor gave this watch to Mr.Purvis.
