A LARGE SILK PAINTING OF IMMORTAL MAGU''S BIRTHDAY GIFT TO THE QUEEN MOTHER OF THE WEST.
China, 18th century, ink and color on silk. Possibly intended as a birthday gift to a high-ranking lady within the Qing court. Xiwangmu, wearing a phoenix crown and lingzhi form jewelry, holds an enormous peach. Surrounded by the fairy Magu and her attendants adorned with peonies and leafy capes, who hold various auspicious objects including a tall scepter of lingzhi as Magu serves the Queen Mother the wine of immortality. Delicate silk mounted on board, darkened with age.
Purchased Hastings House, 1980 71"h. 36"w., framed 76.25"h. 46.5"w.
Mounted on wood to preserve fragile silk, small areas where silk has disintigrated, restorations made as paint applied to the wood mounting.
