A MINIATURE PORTRAIT ON IVORY BY JAMES PEALE (1749-1831) Stated to be Sebastian Bauman, a middle-aged gentleman wearing an indigo jacket open to reveal a white waistcoat and jabot, signed " JP 179_ " on a gray background, cased in an oval engraved gold frame with locket of hair inset to verso and gold monogram " SB " , h: 2.8 in. PROVENANCE: Lot 230, Parke-Bernet sale 1613, October 14 & 15, 1955. A copy of this catalog accompanies the lot. Sebastian Bauman was an officer in the Continental Army during the War of Independence, commanding an artillery unit raised in New York City. The company was raised in 1776 to garrison the fortifications in the Hudson Highlands.
