Circa 1740, one with blue 4, the other with X in blue Painted in underglaze-blue with sailing boats in an estuary before a turreted harbour wall, with rocks and grasses in the foreground, within an octagonal cartouche surrounded by hexagonal medallions of flowers and fan-shaped panels of foliage (the second cracked half across from 8 o'clock, both with slight rim chips) 8 in. (20.5 cm.) wide NOTES Cf. Frank Britton, English Defltware in the Bristol Collection (London, 1982), no. 15.29 and no. 15.28 for three plates dated 1739, where the iconography is related to the arms of Bristol; see also examples sold in these Rooms, 10th February 1986, lot 19, and 5th June 1978, lot 2.
