Attributed to Gillows, circa 1785 Each shaped back with leaf and husk-carved spindles and shaped arms with paterae terminals, the bowed close-nailed buttoned seats upholstered in mustard cotton, raised on square tapered channeled legs with spade feet, one chair with indistinct pencil inscription of Milton (?) to the backrail (2) NOTES This pair of chairs closely relate to a model by the London and Lancaster firm Gillows who refer to this model of chair as a 'Camel back' chair and which appears in side chair form in L. Boynton, Gillow Furniture Designs, 1760-1800, 1995, fig. 260. Pencil or ink inscriptions often appear on pieces by this firm, signed by the tradesman responsible for the article. One of these chairs bears such an inscription. Other Gillow pieces similarly signed includes a set of Regency dining chairs sold in these Rooms, 18 October 2001, lot 304.
