Description: A PRIVATE JOURNAL OF LETTERS KEPT BY FREDERICK H. HODGE ABOARD H.M.S. ACHILLES AND OTHERS BETWEEN 1882-1883
approximately 100 pages in a loose hand comprising unaddressed letters giving accounts of his days aboard ship and time spent at port as well as a hand drawn chart showing the ship's progression: We had a rough passage here. No one was at all well. The men made very good shots. We also exploded two torpedoes at the ends of booms...Of course it was meant to hit the largest up as we passed by it but I believe the boom was forward too far under water.... Bound between original soft bindings -- 7¾ x 6½in. (19.7 x 16.5cm.).; together with a private journal of a midshipman kept aboard H.M.S. Minotaur 1881 and describing daily activities including school, weather conditions and drills. Includes silhouettes of crew mates, small sketches as well as the playbill for 'theatricals in the evening': Two Piece 'Saving a Tiger' and 'An ugly customer' they were both very good and the fellows acted very well.... in original binding inscribed on front 'Private Journal' -- 8½ x 6½in. (21.5 x 16.5cm.)
