Portraits from this period often depict men wearing loose gowns such as this one, which reflected the relaxed informality of the court of King Charles II. Such gowns were the usual working costume of writers and scholars, and by the late 17th century it had become a well-established convention for artists, men of letters and musicians to be painted in them.
Condition Report: Several brass braces to stretcher bars; minor scattered retouch; minor rubbing to frame.
