A Russian Icon of Saint Matthew the Evangelist with repoussé silver gilt oklad
Possibly Aleksandr Panfilov, Moscow, circa 1840
Depicting the evangelist with the gospel, the silver-gilt oklad heavily repoussed in high relief with a landscape scene, the oklad marked AP, and with assay marks for Moscow.
H: 10 1/2,W: 9 in.

The oklad clearly marked on rim and on halo. The whole well-cast and chased, the gilding in fine condition with minor surface oxidation, easily cleaned/removed by a professional.
The icon benath with the following condition issues: wear and surface abrasion from the oklad with losses to bottom edge , sides, and flaking at top from contact with riza; extensive scratching and discoloration to varnish, partially cleaned/stripped in areas, reveailing true color of icon; the face and hands well-painted, more atmospheric and painterly throughout the background.
The icon would benefit from a professional restoration.
