SERGEI GERASIMOV (RUSSIAN 1885-1964), A Peasant, circa 1940s, oil on board, 18 1/2 x 13 in (46.5 x 33 cm), certified by Gerasimov's son on verso in 1973.
Gerasimov Sergei was born in Mozhaisk, Moscow. He studied at Stroganov Collegein 1901-07; Moscow College of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture in 1907-12. He was active in Moscow. He was a member of Makovets; OMKh; AKhR. He exhibited with World of Art in 1921. His important shows include "First Russian Art Exhibition", Berlin, 1922; "Anti-Imperialist Exhibition", Moscow, 1931; "Soviet Russia", Moscow, 1960. He specialized in landscapes, thematic paintings. His well-known works include The Oath of the Siberian Partisans; Collective-Farm Festival (Tretyakov Gallery). He taught at art school of I.D. Sytin Co. printing works in Moscow; Moscow VKhuTeMas/VKhuTeIn, Moscow Polygraphic Institute; Surikov Institute. He was the chairman of Moscow Artists` Union during Stalin`s years. He became a Soviet academician in 1947. Gerasimov was also a book illustrator. He decorated festivals in Moscow in 1918. He was a leading "liberal" member of Stalin`s arts establishment. He was the author of Ob Iskusstve (Moscow, 1973).
