A RUSSIAN PORCELAIN CAKE BASKET FROM THE IMPERIAL ORDER OF ST. VLADIMIR SERVICE, GARDNER, CIRCA 1785
oval, with pierced border and twig handles, painted with the sash, badge and star of the order.
CATALOGUE NOTE
The Order of St. Vladimir was instituted by Catherine the Great in 1782 and the porcelain service for it was ordered by her the following year from the Gardner manufactory. The service was to serve one hundred and twenty knights. A cake basket from this service is reproduced by Marvin C. Ross, Russian Porcelains, 1968, p.175.
