Description: A Scarce Original H.M.A.S. Sydney, S.M.S. Emden Medal, Mexican Silver Dollar, 63mm, surmounted with a crown and integral ring, scrolls worded 'Nov 9 1914 HMAS-Sydney - SMS-Emden', reversed stamped 'W.Kerr, Sydney', very fine

Notes: In the early stages of the Great War, the Australian cruiser Sydney located the German light cruiser Emden in the Cocos Islands off south-west Sumatra. After a short action the German ship was boarded, and a quantity of Mexican dollars was found. A number were mounted as medals by W. Kerr of Sydney and given to the crew to commemorate the engagement, whilst others were sold to members of the public.
