Description: A set of four George III mahogany dining chairs , circa 1760, each shaped rectangular back with serpentine cresting rail centred by acanthus carved detail above the scroll carved pierced openwork design, each needlework upholstered seat above square section legs and stretchers For a design of chair back demonstrating very closely related elements to the current chairs see Thomas Chippendale, The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker s Director, Third Edition, 1762, John Tiranti Ltd, Reprinted in 1939, plate XVI titled Backs of Chairs . The use of the scrolling design that fills the back also relates to a number of designs attributed to Robert Manwaring, see Elizabeth White, Pictorial Dictionary of British 18th century furniture design, Antique Collectors Club, 1990, pages 69-71
