A Staffordshire pearlware circular plaque circa 1790 splashed with in blue and green and molded with a boar running between a man holding a spade, his apron filled with truffles, and a woman with a watering can, holding out an acorn on her spade, pierced lug for hanging and incised WS on the reverse. diameter 6 5/8 in. (16.8cm.) The subject of this plaque, truffle-hunting, is unusual. Boars or pigs were commonly employed by truffle hunters to sniff out the fungus growing close to the roots of trees. Upon discovery of the truffles, an acorn was quickly substituted as a reward to the boar so that the truffles could be gathered before he was able to devour them himself.
