Description: A Victorian mahogany extending dining table, circa 1877, attributed to Gillows, with five additional leaf insertions, the rectangular top with moulded edge above plain frieze with beaded edge, on six turned, tapering reeded legs with lappet carved terminals and gilt brass caps and castors, the screw-action extending action with brass label for JOSEPH FITTER/ PATENT/BRITANNIA WORKS/ CHEAPSIDE BIRMINGHAM, one rail stamped L43758, 74cm high, 145cm wide, 145cm long unextended, 429cm long fully extended Provenance: Haughley Park, Suffolk (until 1956 and thence in a private collection) Joseph Fitter was a Birmingham machinist, and applied for a patent for an extending dining table in 1861. The Lancaster branch of Gillows used a serial number preceded by the prefix L in around 1870. In 1877 they started at 4000, reaching 6000 in 1878, therefore this table can be accurately dated to the early part of 1877.
