Ens. 36 p. in-8 et in-4 (dimensions diverses), suscriptions et 4 enveloppes. Correspondance d''Abel-François Villemain à Alfred de Vigny. Celui qui fut professeur à la Sorbonne, élu à l''Académie française à l''âge de 31 ans, député, pair de France, secrétaire perpétuel de l''Académie française et à deux reprises ministre de l''Instruction publique, exprime dans ses lettres à la fois de l''attachement pour Vigny - sans pour autant lui manifester une réelle amitié - et de l''admiration pour son œuvre. Il fit beaucoup pour que le poète fût élu à l''Académie française, ce qu''il appelait de ses vœux depuis fort longtemps : "J''écrivais hier à Mr de la Martine [sic], qui me remerciait de mon zèle pour une certaine candidature, "Je n''en puis mais : je vous porte avec ardeur pour l''intérêt de notre académie. Vous, Alfred de Vigny, Hugo, Cousin : voilà mes vœux, toujours par patriotisme académique. "" ([24 octobre 1829]). Plusieurs lettres traitent des protégés d''Alfred de Vigny en faveur desquels il demanda à Villemain d''intervenir, Auguste Brizeux, Émile Péhant, Jean-François Pouillon-Desgranges, d''autres sont relatives au discours de réception à l''Académie française de Vigny et à la réponse insultante du comte Molé qui firent l''objet de débats passionnés sous la Coupole et dans les salons parisiens. Plusieurs lettres sont à l''en-tête de ministère de l''Instruction publique et de l''Académie française. [On joint :] Alfred de VIGNY. 1797-1863. Réunion de 26 brouillons et minutes autographes, la plupart signés, de lettres à Abel-François Villemain. [Paris, le Maine-Giraud], 25 avril 1835-15 février 1859. Ens. 46 p. in-8. Cet ensemble comprend notamment la minute de la lettre du 17 février 1846 dans laquelle Vigny refusait pour la troisième fois d''être présenté au Roi par le comte Molé après son élection à l''Académie française. L''obstination du poète fut peu appréciée mais il obtint finalement gain de cause et, d''après Vigny, Louis-Philippe le fit lui-même quérir par le comte de Salvandy, son ministre de l''Instruction publique, pour mettre fin à la polémique. On joint en outre la copie autographe d''une note de Vigny relative à la séance de l''Académie du 22 mai 1861 adressée à Villemain (7 p. in-8 et enveloppe). Ce double de la copie conservée dans les archives de Vigny est signalé par Lise Sabourin (Alfred de Vigny, Papiers académiques inédits, p. 171).
