A student of William Merrit Chase at the Art Students League and in Shinnecock, Long Island, Millar absorbed his teacher's plein-air approach, capturing variations of light and atmosphere with broad, confident brushwork. This summer beach scene evokes images of the Brittany coast by the French Impressionists, yet the site is not a beach resort like Trouville or Deauville. The lone visitor sits on a storage bench beside beached boats on an otherwise deserted sandy shore. While accentuating the American coast as a place for refreshment and rest rather than for fashion, Millar recorded such nuances of light as the variations in the hue of the exterior and interior of the parasol as it reflects or absorbs light, the pink glow cast by the sunshade on the woman's face, and the shadow it created across her dress. He observed flickers of sunlight on the sand with a lively use of his brush.
