More About this Item

Description: 27 November 1911 PARIS. Part de Fondateur. brown, blue. No 1979. Robert & Léon Morane and Raymond Saulnier formed this company in 1911. The Morane brothers started in aviation in 1909. Robert was the constructor andLéon became a pilot, and took part in many meetings. The Moranes, together with Saulnier, built a monoplane, which won the Paris-Madrid race, and so decided to start a business together. The company specialised at first in training aircraft, but converted to fighter aircraft in 1914. In 1914 Saulnier was the first to have the idea of a machine-gun firing through the propeller of the aircraft. In 1916 the company started to produce bombers also. After the war, Morane-Saulnier produced a number of designs for commercial aviation, but with the threat of war in the late 1930s it once again turned to military aircraft. The M.S.406 was the French Air Force's most numerous fighter at the start of WWII. However, it suffered terribly against the more modern German Messerschmitt. Eventually purchased by Aérospatiale.Folds, some staining and damaged right border (repaired).
