This painting is a beautifully rendered copy of Botticelli's Madonna of the Magnificat (1481, Uffizi Gallery, Florence) with a nearly life-size figure of the Virgin being crowned by two angels. The crown is represented as a delicate piece of goldsmith's work comprised of innumerable stars, an allusion to the "Stella matutina" (morning star), a name to which Mary is referred in hymns dedicated to her.
