Première édition de la traduction allemande du « grand ouvrage du fondateur de la géologie glaciaire » (Horblit, One hundred Books famous in Science, n° 1), publiée en même temps que l'édition originale française à la même adresse.
Atlas seul renfermant 18 grandes planches (475 x 317 mm) dessinées d'après nature et lithographiées par Joseph Bettanier, dont 14 sont recouvertes d'une serpente de papier pelure lithographiée et légendée se superposant à la planche correspondante pour en donner la clef.
Deux volumes de texte, non joints ici, parurent en 1841 pour accompagner cet atlas.
Louis Agassiz est né à Môtier, sur les bords du lac de Morat dans le canton de Fribourg.
Protégé de Georges Cuvier et d'Alexander von Humboldt, il se consacra aux sciences naturelles et tout particulièrement à l'étude des glaciers des Alpes.
En se basant sur les travaux de Charpentier, il met en évidence l'existence d'une période géologique pour établir et populariser sa théorie de l'âge glaciaire : ce ne sont pas les déluges et autres catastrophes qui ont modelé de vastes zones de l'Europe, mais des couches de glace (En français dans le texte, n° 258).
