Lot 145: AGATE, James (1877-1947).  Ego. The Autobiography. London: Hamish Hamilton, 1935. Large 8vo. Half title (some waterstaining at the front). Original blue cloth (waterstained, spine faded). Provenance: "Presented to the British Drama League Library" (label); card loosely-inserted. FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, the front free endpaper inscribed, "To St. John [?]Ervine, because of many battles in the same cause - good [?]theatre, James Agate, Jan 15th '35." With a one-page typed letter, signed, from the author to "Gully", loosely-inserted. The letter which is dated 21st October 1937 and written to  'Gully' - (director Campbell Gullan) concerns the production of Agate's version of Zola's J'Accuse, staged in London in that year.  With 5 other books, namely the same author's Alarums and Excursions (London, 1922, FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY), Fred Bason's Diary (London, 1950, FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY), 2nd Diary ([London], 1952, FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY), Third Diary (London, 1955, FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, and The Last Bassoon (London, 1960, FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY).
