AGRIPPA v. NETTESHEYM, H.C. Paradoxe sur l'incertitude, vanité & abus des sciences. Trad. en François. (N.pl., n.pr., 1608. (10), (2 blank), 360 lvs. 12°. Cont. cf. w. raised bands & richly dec. gilt back. (Spine ends worn/chipped, upper joint split at the bottom, corners bumped, stamp on ti., a bit browned in places). Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa v. Nettesheym (1486-1535), studied law, medicine, magic sciences & theology in Cologne. The above work gives emphasis to the tension between the 'verbum Dei' and human knowledge, without providing any basis for the skepticism of which Agrippa has often been accused. 'Incertitudo' here means a real uncertainty of existence, based on the concept of the human being as a created entity. - DSB I, 79-80.
