A Backstage Warning--Country Theater, Suffern.

Pen and ink on illustration board, 1938. 608x774 mm; 24x30 1/2 inches. Signed and inscribed "Suffern N.Y." in ink, recto, and extensively captioned lower margin. With prominent printer's marks.

The captions beneath the interior image read, "Viola Roache conducts the diction class-- in this instance she is teaching a pupil to scream. The student in the foreground rehearses her lines oblivious of the prevailing bedlam." The general caption reads, "A Backstage Warning--Nondas Metcalfe (Mrs. Cutler), Helen Hayes (Mrs. MacArthur) and daughter Mary watch Bob Cutler (producer) dunking in his pool--the art exhibition draws a huge crowd at intemission, oh yes theres a bar too! The county weather vane."
