Description: [Comic Art/Williamson, Al] Al (Alphonso)Williamson (1931-2010) artwork for the first Union Carbide Flash Gordon series featuring Bakelite in "Dream Devils of the Volcanic World." ++ First ad in series featuring Flash Gordon for Union Carbide's thermosetting phenol plastic Bakelite. Gelatin silver photograph of original artwork, with hand-drawn corrections in black marker, loosely mounted to right side of folded black board. Artwork presents Flash Gordon confronting Volcanic Pygmies as he tries to break out of a hypnotic trance with the use of a Bakelite illusion circuit breaker. 2 small spots with removal of image, top right, verso slightly soiled, otherwise in very good condition. ++ 2 page folded production proof of "Dream Devils." On left page Union Carbide "Announces the Appointment of Flash Gordon as Plastics Representative for the Outer Worlds," above copyright notice for King Features Syndicate, Inc., 1970. Lightly toned, staining to fold inside and back, otherwise good condition. Provenance: The material was the property of the Union Carbide corporate advertising executive who worked directly with Williamson and who likely created this particular campaign.
