Description: [Comic Art/Williamson, Al] Al (Alphonso)Williamson (1931-2010) artwork for the Union Carbide Flash Gordon series featuring Bakelite in "The Hairy Giants of Mongo's Northland." In this ad Flash Gordon "has been taken slave by the Hairy Giants who inhabit an icy cave city." ++ Colorist artwork for "Hairy Giants" ad with penciled-in CMYK codes clearly visible and hand-drawn colors added to printed page. On cardstock, verso with written notation "Return to:/ Al Williamson/ ? K.F.S." Front unevenly trimmed, edges creased and chipped, 4 small tears to top and sides, verso w/ minor soiling, 11 x 14 in. With soiled and torn tissue paper with handwritten note "this key has been corrected," "use this color key for reprints" and "more yellow/ color scheme/ in positive." ++ 2 identical production proofs, single page, blank verso. Al Williamson signature and copyright King Features Syndicate, Inc., 1971, in center panel. Lightly toned, chip out in one, crease in other, lower right corner. ++ 8 acetate overlays for the ad: 1 magenta, 1 cyan, 1 yellow and 5 black. All labeled "Union Carbide" and "Flash Gordon - Hairy Giant" on top edge w/ color code. "SOL 4166" on bottom edge. Provenance: The material was the property of the Union Carbide corporate advertising executive who worked directly with Williamson and who likely created this particular campaign.
