Notes: This painting is a study for Gleizes' large seated portrait of Jacques Nayral painted the same year, now in the Tate Gallery, London (see: A. Varichon, op. cit., no. 365). Nayral, literary director of the publishers Editions Figuière, was also a close friend and later brother-in-law of Gleizes. Describing his approach to his portrait of Nayral Gleizes recalled: 'J'ai fait toute une série d'études pour préparer ce portrait... Nayral venait régulièrement à l'atelier; je travaillais directement d'après lui mais le plus souvent le travail consistait en conversations amicales, en promenades au jardin au cours desquelles je l'étudiais' (Pierre Alibert, Gleizes, Paris, 1990, p. 66).
