Author: Albert Hastings Markham - Admiral Sir Albert Hastings Markham was a British explorer, author, and officer in the Royal Navy. In 1903 he was made Knight Commander in the Order of the Bath. He died in London, England at the age of 76. He is also remembered for designing the flag of New Zealand.

Condition / Notes: This is the second edition of this work. This antique Arctic exploration volume is bound in full leather, with gilt borders to the covers, gilt lettering and decoration to the spine, and five raised bands. The volume displays rubbing and cracking at the spine edges, as well as a few small scuffs to the covers. The binding is cracked at the hinges. The text block is adorned with marbled page edges, and the volume is ornamented with marbled endpapers. A previous owner's bookplate is present on the front paste-down, and a signature appears on the verso of the front flyleaf. Foxing can be seen on the endpapers and blank pages at the front and rear of the volume. A tissue-guarded frontispiece is present, with a small chip in the tissue paper. The volume is richly illustrated with textual illustrations and plates, depicting whaling equipment, Arctic wildlife, ships, and glaciers. A color fold-out map is present at the front of the volume.
