Description: ALBRECHT DÜRER
(german 1471-1528)/span
FOUR NAKED WOMEN
1497, engraving
7 1/2 x 5 3/16 in. (19.4 x 13.2cm)
[Bartsch 75]
provenance:
/spanAn Estate, Pennsylvania.

Condition Report: The (apparently) full sheet, set 'floating' within a mat, framed; sheet size: 7 1/2 x 5 3/16 inches. Parts of top, left and bottom outer edges have partial thread margins. Top edge of sheet is affixed to undermat – because the top edge is very difficult to lift off the undermat it is difficult for us to discern if the top edge verso is affixed to undermat with glue or tape. Verso of sheet with unidentified watermark, annotation in pen: 'fB 1602' (?), various pencil notations and a collector's stamp at lower left corner (we have not checked this stamp to see if it is in Lugt). There is an approx. 5/16 x 3/16 inch repair on verso at bottom edge. Also on verso at bottom right is a repaired area, visible on front of sheet at outer lower right edge. As seen in catalogue photo there is a pinhead size dark spot at lower left, a foxing spot within the '4' at the end of the date at upper center and a larger brown spot at lower right, approx. 1/8 x 1/8 inch. Above left most figure's right foot is a localized area of very pale discoloration. The paper has a heavier feel to it than one might typically see, so we wonder – not certain – if sheet has possibly been backed. There is an approx. 3 inch long printer's crease visible on verso and extending (faintly) through part of figures on recto.

Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports. The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging. Interested bidders are strongly encouraged to request a condition report on any lots upon which they intend to bid, prior to placing a bid. All transactions are governed by Freeman's Conditions of Sale.
