for 1886, with browned octagonal 39in. barrel incorporating Rifling Patent 1860 (use no. 611), the top-flat signed ''PATENT NO. 611, GAUGE .451 ALEX''R HENRY 8 SOUTH ST, ANDREW ST EDINBURGH'' (refreshed), dovetailed oval base with white metal guide signed ''HENRY''S PATENT'' and fitted with a Westley Richards front tunnel-sight, reblued scroll engraved breech-block (some minor loss to detail) with engraved platinum plug, tear-drop shaped base-plate for a vernier sight (supplied), border and scroll engraved bar-action lock signed in script below the hammer ''ALEXR HENRY'', sliding safe behind the scroll engraved dolphin headed ''C'' shaped hammer, chequered pistol-grip half-stock with scroll engraved patch-box (currently weighted with lead) fitted to the right side of the butt, the top of comb with later tear-drop plate covering an inlet for a back-position sight, engraved iron heel-plate, silver oval escutcheon to underside of stock, chequered trigger-blade, horn fore-end tip and under-barrel brass-mounted ebony ramrod; TOGETHER WITH its maker''s oak storage case with parchment ''Alexr. Henry'' trade label, the interior lined and compartmented in blue baize, complete with a period brass bullet mould.
Provenance: The makers have kindly confirmed that this rifle was manufactured as a Best Quality Match Rifle for a G. Bogle, and was completed in 1886.
