NOTE
'Exter was neither a Cubist, or Futurist, or Constructivist, or Suprematist or Purist, and there lies her deep originality: she made use of these methods to further her research and surpassed them all.' Jean Chauvelin.
Alexandra Exter was an artist of many disciplines, spanning painting, sculpture, book illustration and set design. During her studies in Paris, she befriended some of the leading figures of the European Avant-garde, such as Pablo Picasso, Sonia Delaunay, Fernand Léger and Max Jacob. Exter herself became pivotal in the transfer of Western theories on Cubism and Futurism to Russia and from 1921-24, she taught colour workshops at the Higher Artistic-Technical Workshop (VkhuTeMas). As a result of her work for the Kamernyi Theatre, Moscow, she to the fore as one of theatre's most innovative designers.
With its strong cubist influences and architectural details, the offered lot shares many similarities with Exter's compositions from the 1930s and 1940s. This desolate, unpopulated landscape echoes the increasing solitude which Exter felt towards the end of her life.
