Description: Alfred de VIGNY 1797-1863 Carnet de notes tenu lors d'un voyage en Angleterre en 1838-1839. Manuscrit autographe [1838-1839]. In-16 oblong (8 x 13 cm), maroquin acajou, dos lisse, contre-gardes et gardes de papier marbré, tranches marbrées, gaine à crayon, fermoir métallique (Cope). Précieux carnet de notes tenu par Alfred de Vigny durant le voyage en Angleterre qu'il effectua avec Lydia, de la fin novembre 1838 à la fin avril 1839, afin de régler la succession de son Hugh Mills Bunbury. Ses notes sont écrites au crayon et à l'encre sur 124 pages, la première, signée, portant la mention "En Angleterre" et, à deux reprises, le millésime 1838. "Les observations du poète portent, en grande partie, sur l'Angleterre et les Anglais. […] À côté de ces notes, fort curieuses pour la plupart, on découvrira avec joie des ébauches d'œuvres achevées plus tard ou abandonnées et quelques vers de la meilleure inspiration" (Jean Sangnier) : "Il y a dans la langue anglaise quelque chose qui me cause une continuelle impatience, c'est la manière dont elle a faussé les mots français que les Normands lui ont imposés. - La pourpre signifie violet au lieu d'écarlate. - Instance exemple au lieu d'instance supplication. - Je ne doute pas que cette manière de prendre en biais les expressions ne soit (avec l'altération de l'alphabet européen) une des causes de la répugnance des Français à parler anglais. - Outre cela l'accent anglais force à prononcer si singulièrement des mots entièrement pareils aux nôtres qu'un Français craint, devant un autre Français, de paraître affecté en parlant bien anglais ; il lui semble qu'il fait la caricature de sa langue. " ; "Note. La tendance aristocratique de toute l'Angleterre fait qu'ici un homme du simple, un artisan, un cocher de diligence, un serrurier ont les manières des gens comme il faut. En France, l'esprit démocratique fait que les gens du rang le plus élevé affectent l'allure des plus basses classes. Or comme la gravité et la politesse des manières conduisent les hommes aux plus douces mœurs, l'une va à l'ordre, l'autre au désordre. " ; "À deux sœurs de Nantwich. Comme deux cygnes blancs à l'élégant plumage / Passent sur l'eau des lacs où tremble leur image / Sans regarder jamais le limpide mirage / Qui réfléchit en lui la grâce de leurs jeux, / Vous passez doucement, sœurs modestes et belles / Sur le paisible lac de vos jours bienheureux. - / En langage français étranger à vos yeux / Ce sera bien en vain que des vers amoureux / Chercheront à vous peindre avec des traits fidèles / Vous lirez sans comprendre et, sur votre miroir, / Comme les beaux oiseaux passerez sans vous voir. " ; "2 avril 1839 à Chester. Route de Chester. Beeston-Castle. Une plaine immense sur la gauche de la route. - Vue qui rappelle un peu le château de Lourdes dans les Pyrénées. - Route charmante. Un canal la suit à droite avant Beeston, à gauche après. De tous les côtés des prés verts entourés de haies comme en Normandie. - Les fermes et les petites maisons toujours à deux étages et construites en briques très rouges. […] Enfin je trouve une ville sale et vieille et un peu désordonnée en Angleterre. Cela ressemble à Rouen. ". Le carnet est illustré de huit dessins : une vue de Douvres (daté "27 avril 1839", à double page), la tour ou porte de Colton (daté "27 avril 1839"), une autre vue du château de Douvres (daté "27 avril 1839"), une vue du château de Beeston, une statue de la reine Élizabeth à Chester (?), une maison de Chester, une vue de Liverpool, un retable. Plusieurs pages ont été arrachées ou découpées anciennement, une autre est presque détachée. Reliure un peu frottée avec pliure centrale au premier plat. Coins émoussés. Manque une moitié du fermoir.
