Très important ensemble réunissant plus de 1 000 lettres écrites à Alfred de Vigny par divers correspondants de 1821 à 1863, et plus de 200 brouillons et minutes autographes de lettres écrites par le poète à divers correspondants de 1832 à 1863.
Cet ensemble unique offre un éclairage irremplaçable sur plus de quarante années de vie, à la fois publique et privée, d''une des grandes figures de la littérature française du XIXe siècle et de la société parisienne sous la monarchie de Juillet et le Second Empire. On joint à cette correspondance les documents qui complétaient souvent les lettres (manuscrits, pièces administratives, etc.), de nombreuses notes autographes de Vigny accompagnant les lettres ou ses propres brouillons et minutes, ainsi que plusieurs documents en marge de cette correspondance, notamment : un laissez-passer autographe de Félicité de La Mennais (1782-1854) en faveur du poète et un reçu signé par Eugène-François Vidocq (1775-1857) portant une annotation autographe de Vigny : " signature curieuse de Vidocq que je mis à la piste d''un vol fait à ma mère ".
