The Apolino statue, Florence. Circa 1854. Large-format lightly coated salt print. 33 x 25 cm. Number 25 in lower right corner in the negative, mounted to card (some foxing), photographer's blindstamp Fratelli Alinari, Fotografi Firenze, Presso Luigi Bardo below the image on the mount.
This early Alinari photograph of the Apolino statue shows the statue without a fig leaf on its genitalia. Later photos by Giorgio Sommer, Giacomo Brogi and even Alinari show the statue with a fig leaf. For a fee the fig leaf could be removed and Leopoldo Alinari most certainly paid the museum to photograph the statue in its natural state. - A few light scuff marks, otherwise a rich dark print in very good condition.
