Engr title has 1595 date handwritten in sepia with backwards C’s, but the engr title otherwise does not have any publisher or year.] The engraved title’s printed (letterpress) portion consists of a printed a slip mounted over the printed portion of the engraved title used for the 1st German edition of 1595. This is as described by Church 186-187. This is the 2nd German edition of the 5th volume of Theodore de Bry and Girolamo Benzoni’s Grand Voyages. Graesse, Vol I, pp 560-561. The illustrations depict Indians as uncivilized, unclothed, and inferior to their Spanish conquerors. Several engravings show hand to hand combat with spears, swords, and in one case archers. One illustration shows a Spaniard sitting at a table handing a piece of meat to an Indian sitting on the floor beside the table. Another shows a Spaniard laying in a hammock with Indians tending a cooking fire and sweeping the floor. 1st engraving shows a Spaniard pouring hot liquid on a wounded Indian. Pagination: [engr title], [blank verso], 3-115pp, [blank verso]; [prtd title leaf to Illustrated section], I-XXII single-sided leaves, each with an engraving and text. Page 57 mis-paginated “115” and corrected in pencil. Several leaves carrying engravings have a page number written by an early hand (as opposed to the printed leaf number). Late 1800s or early 1900s, the engraved title was separated from the rest of sig A, and slips of paper were mounted to large portions its verso, now slightly foxed. Toned, some staining, light creasing.
