Estimate: $1,500 - $2,500

Description: AMERICAN SCHOOL
(19th century)
PORTRAIT OF PRESIDENT FRANKLIN PIERCE, HALF LENGTH
Oil on canvas
30 x 25 1/8 in. (76.2 x 63.8cm)
provenance:
New Orleans Auction, New Orleans, sale of May 5, 1993, lot 29.

Condition Report: Frame: 36 1/2 x 31 1/2 in. the relined canvas in generally fair overall condition, with prominent surface craquelure throughout, with some of paint displaying some cupping - mostly at right - where craquelure is most pronounced. Some areas of the painting are difficult to accurately 'read' under u.v. light due to residual varnish and pigments used. Pierce's head and hair are in generally fine overall shape, with only minor localized retouch to part of left side of face and some apparently newer linear retouch at his jawline. There is some scattered restoration to parts of vestment, an area of restoration at back of chair and some restoration in areas of background.

Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports. The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging. Interested bidders are strongly encouraged to request a condition report on any lots upon which they intend to bid, prior to placing a bid. All transactions are governed by Freeman's Conditions of Sale.
