Designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh for the White Bedroom, Hous'hill, Nitshill, Glasgow, 1904 Stylised lattice back, gently curved seat rails 29in. (73.5cm.) high PROVENANCE Auction of Hous'hill furniture, 18 May 1933. Thence by descent. NOTES Cf: Roger Billcliffe, Charles Rennie Mackintosh. The Complete Furniture, Furniture Drawings & Interior Designs, New York, 1979, p. 174-175, no. 1904.93 A copy of the original bill of sale from the auction of 18 May 1933 accompanies the present Lot. The White Bedroom at Hous'hill was one of Mackintosh's last white rooms. The black chairs stood in stark contrast to the decor of the room. The design of the chair is subtle and requires close examination to fully appreciate details such as the gap between the seat or the direct mirroring of the front and back upright stretchers.
