The luohan are those original converts of the Buddha who reached the enlightenment and therefore they are close to Nirvana: for this reason the reincarnation is no longer necessary. In Chinese Art they are eighteen, whereas in Japan they are sixteen. This difference is presumably due to the paintings of the monk GuanXiu (891 d.C.), considered the first Chinese depictions of the luohan.
