An outstanding double-barrelled flintlock shotgun
dating: last quarter of the 18th Century
Smooth, round, blued, three-stage, 15 mm cal. barrels, octagonal at the first part, then of sixteen faces and finally round, finely engraved and decorated on almost the entire length with trophies, floral motifs and golden frames, the rib marked "Canon Tordu", the foresight framed with rays; engraved tang, partially gilt and provided with broad sight; beautiful flintlocks signed "Manuf.re Royale" and "De St. Etienne", the ends of the locks and the hammers pierced and chiselled with bas-relieved trophies and floral motifs, the batteries with effigy of vases and flames, the remaining parts engraved with rays and frames, everything on almost gilt ground; half stock sculpted with floral motifs; beautiful silver mounts decorated with bas-relieved trophies and floral motifs, the trigger guard and the butt-plate with stamp, at the back of the butt-plate a small shield surmounted by a eagle head and a hunter trumpet. Silver-tipped wooden ramrod with iron and brass cartridge extractor. Saint-Etienne Royal Manufacture mostly produced military arms, however, exceptionally, as in this case, its best manufacturers used to produce luxury arms of great quality commissioned by important clients, often royals.
