An outstanding double-barrelled pin-fire/percussion shotgun by Francis Marquis
dating: third quarter of the 19th Century
Smooth, round, 16 gauge barrels with tall rib featuring the golden signature "FRANCIS MARQUIS A PARIS" on granulated ground, the base and the nozzle finely chiselled with floral motifs and vine shoots on gilt ground; long tang decorated en suite. Backward spring locks provided with plates signed "MARQUIS" and decorated with beautiful bas-relieved floral motifs on opaque golden ground, elegant, pierced hammers featuring golden decorations on steel ground and steel decorations on golden ground, decorated spark-arrester; the receiver decorated en suite. Butt and fore-end made of fine briarwood decorated with filigree at the neck, the palm rest, enriched with thin, golden thread at the borders. The mounts decorated en suite, as the receiver, the locks and the barrels; elegant trigger guard pierced with curls, if unlocked and turned horizontal it releases the barrels. At the butt-plate a drum with cover. Bone-tipped wooden ramrod with metallic cartridge extractor. This certainly is one of the most beautiful double-barrelled shotguns on the market since the end of the War. Francis Marquis is documented in Paris from 1835 to 1872, at number 2 and later at 4, Boulevard des Italiens.
