Lot 45: AN UNUSUAL SHOULDER CAPE
November 19, 2016
Vienna, Vienna, AustriaLive Auction
Textile, some metal Gau, over 2000 gemstones. India, Ladakh, possibly 19th century
A rare and unusual adornment with so many elaborate details that it is hard to describe each completely. It is shaped as a flower with four petals, each cusped at the end, and a perforation in the center for wear around the neck. One of the petals is split along the middle in order to allow placement around the neck and over the shoulders. The turquoise stones are the most striking applications and also the brightest! They are followed by coral, also bearing a beautiful color. Various stones (or beads) form borders or circular medallions enclosing further stitched-on stone- and bead applications. Most of these are in star formations, others include circling bead motifs. There are three elements which take the shape of a gau, the fourth could not be applied due to the petal being split into two sections by the opening. The gau (amulet containers usually worn around the neck) are embellished with turquoise stones around the center. Disregarding the small dark-red stones, there are approximately 530 stones per petal, which totals to approximately 2300 to 2400 stones on this shoulder cape. This “shoulder cape” is naturally quite heavy and was intended to be worn only on special occasions.

布加寶石造加金屬邊肩膀套。印度，拉達克，約19世紀。大小60 x 60 厘米。
A noteworthy share of the antiques offered here – around 130 lots – originate from the Collection Sohel Ch., a successful business man from Delhi who spent many years in Vienna. The part of his collection, which we here offer, was mainly acquired in the art trade of Vienna. The chief reason for his collecting activity, which he perpetuated with considerable specialized knowledge, sense for quality and great committment, was to establish a private Asian museum in his native city of New Delhi. Because of severe illness, it was impossible for him to realize his plan and he thus decided to submit us the entire complex of his "Viennese collection" for sale.
