"Ericsson's achievements began in his early life when he worked in Sweden and later in England developing an effective steam locomotive. By his invention of the screw propeller he revolutionized maritime engineering for peace and for war. He brought the peoples of the world closer together in points of time, in personal contact and in the exchange of their commodities. His "Monitor", representing the North in the battle of March 9, 1862 with the "Merrimac" of the South, was one of the leading factors in the preservation of the Union and made him one of the immortals of naval invention. For the last thirty years of his life he designed caloric engines for ships and was experimenting with solar energy powered machines at the time of his death." Illustrated.
