As comprehensive a study with copious illustrations as could be imagined." SIGNED IN BROWN INK BY AUTHOR "GEO. HENRY PREBLE" AT END OF PREFACE TO SECOND EDITION. THIS IS A SUBSCRIBER’S COPY THAT SUPPOSEDLY HAD A PRINT RUN OF ONLY 500 COPIES, ALL SIGNED BY PREBLE. AN UNCOMMON AUTOGRAPH IN HIS MOST FAMED WORK. George Henry Preble (1816-1885) was an American naval officer and writer, notable for his history of the flag of the US and for taking the first photograph of the Fort McHenry flag that inspired The Star Spangled Banner. Preble was also known as a writer on naval and historical topics, and as a collector of naval documents. His extensive personal library of books and documents related to the sea are located in The George Henry Preble Collection at the Navy Department Library. Profusely Illustrated w/ 10 COLOR Plates (All present), A Copley engraved Portrait of Flkanah Watson, & 200 Engravings. Abrasions from removal of Library material from inside front & rear covers, front rear hinges starting, previous owner’s name/address on 2nd blank end paper/ two short worm holes—-worms not included—-in outer edge of text block affecting nothing, o/w unmarked. Binding Exterior; original cloth with general handling wear/rubbing/chipping to head/foot of spine; but all lettering/decorations bright. X-library with usual faults. NO REMAINDER MARK.
