An estuary landscape with a peasant couple catching duck with decoys, harvesters by the shore and shipping on the water beyond signed with monogram 'AA' (lower left) oil on panel 12 5/8 x 26 7/8 in. (32 x 68.4 cm.) PROVENANCE with P. de Boer, Amsterdam, 1955. Anonymous Sale; Mak van Waay, Amsterdam, 7 April 1970, lot 20. Anonymous Sale; Sotheby's Mak van Waay, Amsterdam, 29 April 1985, lot 117 (to Dreesmann). Dr Anton C.R. Dreesmann (inventory no. A-58). NOTES Arent Arentsz. gained his sobriquet 'Cabel' from the name of his house on the Prinsengracht, Amsterdam. His highly realistic summer and winter landscapes are closely related to those of his exact contemporary, Hendrick Avercamp (1585-1634), who was born in Amsterdam, but moved to Kampen as an infant. The nature of the two artists' professional relationship is unknown, although it is interesting to note the evidence of Avercamp's direct influence on Arentsz. in the former's Winter landscape in the present sale (lot 528). Arentsz. nonetheless established his own very distinctive interpretation of the polders of the Dutch coastal region, of which the present work is an excellent example. The horizontal format of the picture, and the rather idiosyncratic figures in the foreground are also characteristic of the artist's style, comparable with the picture sold in these Rooms, 13 December 2000, lot 29.
